Two children, woman found dead inside Cleveland home next to field where man was shot to death

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Two children and a woman were found dead Tuesday inside a home next to a field where a man was found shot to death, officials said.

Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams said investigators have several “persons of interest” they are trying to track down in connection with the quadruple homicide.

Police found the man dead about 8 p.m. in a field on East 63rd Street near Fleet Avenue in the city’s Slavic Village neighborhood. Investigators smelled smoke in a nearby home, broke their way into the home and found the two kids and woman inside, Williams said.

He said fire accelerants were found in the room where the blaze was set.

Williams said he did not know the ages of the victims, nor a cause of death for the two kids and woman found dead in the home. Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson called it a “truly heinous” crime.

Ward 12 Cleveland City Councilman Anthony Brancatelli, whose ward includes Slavic Village, said the neighborhood has seen a positive resurgence of late, with several vacant homes being torn down and one of the strongest neighborhood block watches in the area.

“This is truly unfortunate and heinous,” Brancatelli said.

Dozens of police officers, crime scene investigators and homicide detectives swarmed the area after the bodies were found.

Family members stood stunned outside the police tape, wept and hugged each other. One ran through the crime scene tape and was stopped by a police officer.

The four deaths is the deadliest crime in Cleveland since a November 2014 fatal shooting in which five people were killed, including a newborn baby and a 17-year-old girl.
